On
Wednesday May 14th, 2008 Ladder 58 was dispatched around 0230 hours
to assist Station 18 on working structure fire on Main Street in Clifford.
Ladder 58 responded with a crew of 6. Upon arrival Ladder 58 was requested by
command to carry out a vertical ventilation assignment and was positioned on
the AD corner of the structure. The 58 crew went to work setting up the aerial
device to ventilate the structure. As conditions of the structure deteriorated
all interior operations were pulled by the 106 command and the vertical
ventilation assignment was pulled because of an incave collapse of the roof.
Ladder 58 then quickly switched from offensive to defensive operations. The ladder
pipe was put into service along with 18's ladder pipe. As operations continued
throughout the morning in defensive mode the crew from Ladder 58 assisted
Station 18 with extinguishing the fire. Also personnel from 58 assisted Rescue
59 with the R.I.T. assignment. Ladder 58 remained on the scene assisting
Station 18 for about four hours and then was clear by the 106 command.

During the week of April 21st a PlymoVent system was
installed in the firehouse. This system was purchased through the Department of
Homeland Security Firefighter Assistance Grant. The purpose of the PlymoVent
system is to connect to both of our pieces of apparatus via the tailpipe and
capture 100% of its exhaust emissions. Everything in this system is automatic
from the fan activation to the automatic release from when the apparatus is
leaving the apparatus bay to respond on a call. When we return from the call
all that is required is a simple connection back to the tailpipe of the
apparatus when it is entering back into the apparatus bay. The purpose of the
system is to be able to start the apparatus and not have any personnel inhale
any exhaust emissions while getting ready to respond on a call. This makes our
firehouse a safer work area for our members.

Monday,
April 21, 2008 Crystal Fire Company member and Borough Fire Police Captain
Eddie Albert passed away at his home. Eddie was very dedicated member to the
fire company and to the borough fire police.
Eddie himself went to a lot of training and promoted training for all other
fire police members. Eddie also obtained money to purchase equipment for the
fire police to enhance their services to our department and mutual aide
departments. Eddie had just received the
Fire Police Officer of the year award through the Lackawanna County Fire Police
Association on Sunday, April 20, 2008. It did not matter if it was 3 in the
evening or 3 in the morning he would always be in his fire police uniform. We
always use to tease him and tell him was always the best dressed for a call no
matter what time the call came in at and that he was like superman. If we would get a call in our first due or a
mutual aide run we can almost guarantee Eddie to be on the corner stopping
traffic so we can make our way through the intersection with the engine or
ladder in the safest way as possible. He was leader and very dedicated member
to this fire company for many years and he will be greatly missed.
The
officers and members would like to send out its condolences to Mrs. Albert and
her family for their loss and we would also like to tell you that if there is
anything we can do we are always here for you. Eddie and you are like family to
us here at the firehouse.
Eddie
you are in our hearts and prayers now and forever!
